LaRocca and Armbruster go the distance as Falcons split with Cards

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio -- Notre Dame pitchers Zack LaRocca and Josh Armbruster allowed just two runs on 10 hits in Friday afternoon's double header at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Falcons split with Wheeling Jesuit, falling 2-1 in game one, before taking game two, 6-0.

Notre Dame (11-7, 11-5 MEC) has now split three consecutive double headers, while Wheeling Jesuit (6-13, 5-9 MEC) has now lost five out of their last six games.

Game One
Both hits and runs were tough to come by in the first game for both teams, as they combined for just three runs on six hits. Wheeling Jesuit got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Brock McGivern began the game with a single to right field, and made his way to second on a wild pitch. Anthony Connacher then popped out into foul ground on the first base side. McGivern advanced to third on the play, and made his way home on an errant throw.

The Falcons tied the game in the game in the bottom of the third. Jalen Fields started the inning with a base hit. He stole second base, and made his way to third as Danny Beaver reached on a bunt base hit. Later in the inning, Keifer Quick walked to load the bases, and Blake Miller drove Fields home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

A balk allowed the Cardinals to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Pat Ammar started the inning with a double to left field, and Tyler Kowalczyk moved him over to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, and runners on second and third, a balk allowed Ammar to score. Moments later,  Armbruster (1-2) fanned the final batter of the inning.

Notre Dame had a chance to tie in sixth, and again in the seventh. TJ Lett walked to start the sixth inning, and advanced to second on Clayton Farrar's sacrifice bunt, but never advanced any further. Keifer Quick was hit by a pitch with two outs in the second, and made his way to second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded at the end of the game.

Armbruster, the reigning Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the week, went the distance, and allowed just a pair of runs, on only three hits while fanning four in the loss.

Game Two
The Falcons received a huge performance from LaRocca (2-1) in the second game. LaRocca tossed a complete game shutout, and fanned four batters while scattering seven hits in a winning effort.

While LaRocca dominated on the mound for Notre Dame, the NDC offense scored six times on 11 hits in the lopsided victory.

Notre Dame got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Lett started the inning with a triple to right field, and scored later in the inning on Andrew Hurd's sacrifice fly. The Falcons added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Bryan Blondeaux belted a run scoring double to the gap in left center, plating Lett in the process, and Farrar's sacrifice fly brought Blondeaux home to give NDC a 3-0 lead.

The Falcons really put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning, where they scored three more times on four hits to pull away. Quick started the rally on a one out single back up the middle, made his way to second on a passed ball, and scored on Blake Miller's RBI single to center. Three batters later, Hurd broke the game open with a two-out, two-run single to left center to cap the big inning.

Hurd had a huge game at the dish for NDC, going 2-for-2 with three RBI's. Lett had a big day as well, turning a 3-for-3 performance in the second contest, and he reached six times altogether in the twin bill. Miller and Danny Beaver both hit safely twice in the second contest for the Falcons as well.

The Falcons and Cardinals will finish their weekend series with another MEC double header on Saturday afternoon at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
