Box Score 2 AVON, Ohio – In a pair of tightly contested games at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Notre Dame Falcons split a double header with Fairmont State, winning 3-2 in game one, before falling, 2-1 in nine innings in game two.
Game One
The first game of the day was a wild one, as the Falcons took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, where Fairmont State scored both of their runs to tie the game, before the Falcons won in walk off fashion on an errant throw.
Keifer Quick scored first for the Falcons. He began the fourth inning with a single to center field, before stealing second base.
Blake Miller's groundout pushed him over to third, and he scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
TJ Lett reached on a walk later in the inning. He stole second, made his way to third on a passed ball and scored on
Shane DeFranco's RBI single through the left side.
Josh Armbruster took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, marking the second time he's accomplished that feat this season. In the seventh, FSU scored twice to tie the game at 2-2, but had a chance to do so much more.
FSU got on the board as Frankie Wilson reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and nobody out, and Trevor Malnick, who broke up Armbruster's no hit bid with a leadoff single, came around to score. A squeeze play followed, which tied the game. Darrin Zombro dropped a bunt down, which allowed Nic Rush to score.
The Fighting Falcons had runners on second and third and just one out, when
Phil Ramos (5-0) made a sensational defensive play to keep the game tied at 2-2. Josh Wine hit a liner back toward the mound, Ramos made an amazing diving catch, and threw to third to finish the double play, getting the Falcons out of the inning.
Taylor Neville capitalized on that momentum, as he began the home half of the seventh inning with a pinch hit double to the gap in right-center.
Bryan Blondeaux pinch ran for him at second, and scored the game winning run, after
Austin Barnhart laid a bunt down, which caused FSU catcher Scott Hessler to toss an errant throw up the first base line.
Ramos earned the victory for the Falcons, retiring the only batter he faced, inducing the big double play which ended the seventh. Six Falcons hit safely in the contest, but there were no multi-hit games.
Game Two
Lett had a pair of leadoff singles for the Falcons in the second game of the day. His base hit started the second inning, and on the next play, he scored all the way from first base on DeFranco's base hit to the gap in right center field.
Fairmont State was kept off the board until the top of the sixth inning when they plated the game tying run with two outs. They had runners on first and second with two away, when Malnick stroked a single to shallow left center, scoring Josh Wine in the process.
Both teams had chances to score as the game went into extra innings, but Fairmont State plated the game winning run in the top of the ninth. With two outs and runners at the corners, Josh Wine belted a RBI single through the left side to score Christian Hedinger.
Ramos (5-1) suffered the loss for the Falcons, after allowing a run on five hits over 3.2 innings of relief. Stover was strong for the Falcons over 5.1 innings of work, allowing a run on a hit, and fanned four.
Notre Dame and Fairmont State will finish the weekend series at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday, April 26, which is Senior Day for the Falcons. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
