Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- In their final bit of non-conference action this season, the Notre Dame Falcons dropped a double header to Indianapolis on Tuesday, falling 9-3 in game one and 5-2 in game two.
The Falcons (18-15) have now lost five of their last six games, while the Greyhounds (24-17) improved to 14-2 at home with the sweep.
Game One
A first inning error allowed the Greyhounds to take a 1-0 lead early on. Zach Jacobs stroked an 0-2 pitch to right field for a leadoff single, before advancing to second on a groundout. Brady Thomas then hit a ball to right field which was bobbled, allowing Jacobs to score.
Notre Dame was held hitless until
Danny Beaver stroked a one-out double in the top of the fourth inning. Indy then went off with a six run frame in the home half of the fourth to pull away. They did a lot of their damage at the beginning of the inning, as the first two batters reached on extra base hits, and the inning was highlighted by Anthony Asalon's grand slam.
Indy scored two more runs in the home half of the sixth inning, before the Falcons plated all three of their runs in the seventh.
Bryan Blondeaux scored the first run on a wild pitch, before
Austin Barnhart and
TJ Lett stroked back-to-back RBI singles.
Zack LaRocca (4-2) allowed seven runs, six earned on eight hits while fanning three over four innings of action.
Game Two
The Falcons were retired in order for the first four innings of the contest, while the Greyhounds mounted a 2-0 advantage, getting a pair of runs on two hits and capitalized on a pair of errors in the bottom of the third.
Notre Dame came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning tie the game at 2-2. Blake Miller ended a string of 12 consecutive batters retired by Cornwell (3-3), with a single to start the fifth inning. Two batters later,
Shane DeFranco smashed his first homer of the season, a two-run blast to tie the game at 2-2.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, they would only record two more hits the rest of the way, while the Greyhounds scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Thomas snapped the 2-2 tie with a run scoring single to center, and McCracken brought in the final two runs a base hit to left.
NDC put one last threat together in the seventh inning. They had the tying runs on, with two outs after Miller doubled, and walks were issued to DeFranco and
Troy Findlay, but the Greyhounds got out of the jam.
Zach Gresch (2-4) went the distance and didn't allow an earned run in the contest on five hits, and fanned five batters in the loss.
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, April 25, as they begin their final home series of the season, with a four-game MEC weekend series with Fairmont State at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio. The first pitch in game one on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
