Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College volleyball team dropped tough match to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Falcons lost the match 3-0 to the Cardinals at Murphy Gym.
The Falcons jumped out to an impressive start, rallying back early to tie the first set at 10-10 behind a kill from
Melissa Maczuzak and errors from WJU. The Cardinals went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-11 lead in the first set, but a pair of kills from Maczuzak and
Lindsay Shirilla kept the Falcons in the match.
However, WJU found its rhythm and closed the first set on a strong note, winning the set by a 25-15 score.
The Cardinals continued their strong play in the second set, taking an 18-9 lead over the Falcons midway through. But then the Falcons responded, making a run of their own to claw back into the set.
Shirilla recorded three straight kills for NDC, cutting the deficit to 18-12. An attack error from WJU was compounded by another kill from Shirilla, and NDC was right back in the thick of the second set, trailing just 18-14. However, a 5-0 run from WJU extended their second-set lead to 23-14, leading to a 25-15 win.
In the third set, the Falcons persevered to fight back in the match, but fell short, dropping the third and final set, 25-11.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-24 overall on the season. NDC will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at home against Lake Erie College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Murphy Gym.
