Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing under a dark overcast sky at Mueller Field, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team hosted the visiting West Liberty Hilltoppers in a Mountain East Conference showdown. The Falcons controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish, winning the game by a final score of 2-0.
The Falcons (8-3-1 overall, 7-2-1 MEC) and Hilltoppers began the game at a back-and-forth pace, with neither side able to maintain consistent ball control. Shot attempts were at a premium at times, with both sides looking for early offense, but it was the Falcons who struck first.Â
In the 10th minute,
Jillian Doss settled the ball deep in the WLU box and snuck a shot past the Hilltoppers goalkeeper to the left side, scoring an early goal to give NDC a 1-0 lead over WLU. The goal from Doss was her team-leading fifth goal of the 2015 campaign.
As the first half progressed, the Falcons settled in against their opponent and maintained ball control while limiting shot attempts from the Hilltoppers. Strong defensive play led to more offense as NDC's
Sarah Grossman dished a spot-on cross into the WLU box, and
Katarina Doncevic ripped a shot to the back left side to put the Falcons ahead 2-0.
With a 2-0 lead in hand, the Falcons' continued to stifle the Hilltoppers offense. NDC limited WLU to just two shot attempts in the first half, and the Falcons went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In the second half, offense for both sides was less frequent as neither side generated many offensive chances. The Falcons outshot the Hilltoppers by a 4-1 margin in the second half, including a 3-1 mark on corner kicks, but weren't able to score any more goals.
However, the Falcons didn't need more offense as they already held a 2-0 lead, and relied upon the defense to shut down the Hilltoppers attack.
From there, NDC's defense nearly eliminated all offensive chances for WLU. At the end of regulation, the score remained the same as it did at halftime as the Falcons went on to secure a 2-0 home win over the Hilloppers.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-3-1 on the season, including a 7-2-1 mark in MEC play.
The Falcons will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 15 on the road against the Shepherd Rams in another MEC matchup. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
