HARRISONBURG, Va. -- With the effects of Hurricane Joaquin battering the East Coast, there were questions as to whether the game between Notre Dame and James Madison would proceed. However, the game was given the all-clear and, to that end, the NDC men's rugby team extended their winning streak to five.
The Falcons travelled Friday night to Harrisonburg, Virginia, fueling themselves up with a Chinese buffet that night - a team favorite. The conditions Saturday morning were frigid, wet and blustery, which made for a low scoring match. The Falcons adjusted well to the conditions and came away with a 27-7 win against the defending 7's national champions.
The 10-man game was in full effect, which was reflected by tries to prop
Kevin Perciak, flyhalf
Marcus Tupuola (2) and flanker
Cian Grendon. Scrumhalf
Logan Weinstock added one penalty and two conversions to top off an clinical passing game. Hooker
John Santiago had an outstanding all round game particularly with his accurate throwing in trying conditions.
Meanwhile, the Falcons second side managed a 10-10 draw in a sloppy game. Captain
Tony Williams made some crunching tackles while Joe Perella, Matt Smith,
Dylan Rice and Joe Wollerman provided the impetus on attack with their ball running.
The team resumes play again at home on Saturday, October 24 against what will be the toughest opponent in the program's history - Davenport University - who were D1-A semifinalists last season and are consistently ranked in the top-five out of all colleges and divisions across the United States.
Game time against Davenport is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mueller Field.
