Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons pushed Fairmont State to their limit on Saturday evening at Murphy Gymnasium, as they fell in five sets.
For Notre Dame (1-13, 0-4 MEC) the loss was their third at home this year, and their fifth five set loss of the year, while the win for Fairmont State (11-5, 3-0 MEC) was their seventh in a row and their fourth in five matches on the road.
Early on, things didn't look good for the Falcons, as Fairmont State was red hot out of the gate, taking a 25-11 victory in the opening set, and they followed that up with a 25-15 victory to take a 2-0 lead.
Notre Dame responded with a pair of victories, in two close sets, in a valiant effort to tie the match. The Falcons won the third set, 25-23, and repeated that with a second consecutive 25-23 victory.
In the final set of the night, Notre Dame had a 3-2 lead, and the set was tied at 5-5, before Fairmont State scored the next five points and pulled away with a 15-8 victory.
Leading the way for the Falcons was
Lindsay Shirilla, who had 15 kills on the night to go along with a pair of blocks.
Tawny Flareau had 19 assists and led the Falcons with 17 digs as well.
Angela Bush had nine kills as well as four blocks, while
Shelby Regiec had 12 assists,
Elizabeth Hasebein added 11 digs and
Tawnia Almaraz added 11 digs.
The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host Urbana in another Mountain East Conference matchup. The contest is scheduled for a 7 PM start.
