Box Score WHEELING, W.Va -- Continuing their recent stretch of hot play, the Notre Dame College women's soccer defeated the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference battle. The Falcons scored twice in the second half to break a halftime tie, taking the road victory over the MEC rival Cardinals.
The Falcons controlled the tempo early in the contest, maintaining ball possession and peppering the WJU goalkeeper with shot attempts. NDC's offensive persistence eventually turned one of those shot attempts into a goal in the 17th minute.
Running down the right side of the field,
Jillian Doss dished a pass into the box to
Riley Doyle, who scored to give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead at the 16:16 mark.Â
However, the Cardinals responded with offense of their own. WJU capitalized on a free kick in the 34th minute, tying the score at 1-1.Â
Despite outshooting the Cardinals by an 8-4 margin in the first half, the Falcons went to halftime with the score knotted at one.Â
In the second half, NDC returned to form by dominating ball possession and limiting shot attempts from the Cardinals. With the score tied 1-1 and the Falcons in need of a road win, they relied on the 2014 Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
Alexis Manoa scored a clutch free kick goal for the Falcons in the 66th minute, sniping the top right corner to give NDC the lead once again, 2-1.Â
Looking to build upon their 2-1 lead, the Falcons continued to apply offensive pressure. In the 79th minute, the Falcons offense struck again as
Katarina Doncevic scored with an assist from Alex DeFilippo, pushing NDC's lead to 3-1 with just 11 minutes left in the contest.
From there, the Falcons held on for the 3-1 road win over the host Cardinals. With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-4-1, including an 11-3-1 mark in MEC play.
Furthermore, the goal by WJU was just the second goal that NDC has surrendered in the month of October. NDC is 6-1 in the month of October while outscoring opponents 13-2 in the process.
The Falcons will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at home against Concord University in what will be Senior Day for the women's soccer program. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mueller Field.
