Women's soccer dominates Charleston in 3-0 win

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- In the second-to-last home game of the 2015 campaign, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team played host to the visiting Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon at Mueller Field. The Falcons dominated the Mountain East Conference contest from start to finish, beating Charleston by a final score of 3-0.

The game also marked NDC's "Sock It 2 Breast Cancer" game, as the Falcons wore pink jerseys in support of October's pink SU2BC initiative.

Offense came early once again for the Falcons, who scored less than five minutes into the game. At the 4:44 mark, Megan O'Connor scored a header goal for NDC, giving the Falcons the early 1-0 lead over Charleston.

The Falcons offense continued to fire shots at the Golden Eagles goalkeeper, keeping the Charleston defense on its heels throughout the contest. Keeping their foot on the pedal, the Falcons tacked on another goal in the 17th minute as Alex DeFilippo found the back of the net for NDC, pushing the lead to 2-0 early in the first half.

Samantha Shoemaker made her second start of the season in net for the Falcons, and proved why she was named 1st Team All-Mountain East Conference in 2014.

Shoemaker and the Falcons' stout defensive front limited shot attempts from Charleston, holding UC to just two shot attempts in the first half.

At halftime, the Falcons still held a 2-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles while outshooting UC by a 10-2 margin as well.

Coming out of the halftime break, NDC wasn't satisfied with a 2-0 lead. Alexis Manoa, the 2014 MEC Offensive Player of the Year, created more offense for NDC with a corner kick attempt. Manoa launched an excellent corner kick into the box, and O'Connor capitalized with her second goal of the day, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute.

With a controlling 3-0 lead in hand, the Falcons continued to stymie the Golden Eagles offensive attack, holding Charleston to just four shots in the second half.

From there, the Falcons dominated ball possession and held on for the 3-0 win over Charleston. With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-4-1 overall, including a 9-3-1 mark against MEC competition.

NDC will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 on the road against the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Wheeling, West Virginia.
