Women's soccer drops narrow 1-0 contest to WV Wesleyan

Box Score
BUCKHANNON, W.Va -- In a rematch of last season's Mountain East Conference Championship game, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team squared off with the host West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Sunday afternoon. While the Falcons won last season's MEC Championship game 1-0, the result was reversed this time around as NDC fell to WVW by a narrow 1-0 final.

After making her 2015 season debut on Thursday against Shepherd, Samantha Shoemaker made her first start of the season on Sunday against the Bobcats. Shoemaker, who was named 1st Team All-MEC last season, lived up to her billing against WVW.

Shoemaker made seven saves in the first half alone for NDC, keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard for the entirety of the first half. However, the Falcons' offense was also unable to get on the scoreboard, leading to a scoreless tie at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, the Falcons offense continued to push for offensive chances, but they were few and far between. However, while the Bobcats defense played strong, Shoemaker and the Falcons defense matched that effort.

Shoemaker made four more saves in the second half, continuing to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard. Neither side was able to capitalize on offense, leading to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.

Just over one minute into overtime, heartbreak struck for the Falcons. With the ball in NDC's box and a cluster in front of the net, WVW's Keenan Moreta scored to give the Bobcats a 1-0 win over the Falcons in overtime.

The 1-0 loss marks the first loss for the Falcons since Sept. 27 in a similar 1-0 decision against Charleston. The Falcons drop to 9-4-1 on the season, including 8-3-1 in MEC play.

NDC will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 22 at home against Charleston in another MEC matchup. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Mueller Field.
