Box Score SHEPHERD, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team went into Thursday's match at Shepherd riding a four-game win streak, and looked to pick up yet another win over the host Rams in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Falcons used an early goal from
Jillian Doss and a late goal from
Lytia Hart to pick up a 2-0 win over Shepherd, extending the teams win streak to five.
The match began at Noon on Thursday and before either side was able to settle in, the Falcons had already scored the first goal of the game.
Jillian Doss scored the opening goal just 42 seconds into the match, with an assist from
Maranda Melton, again scoring early for the Falcons. The goal from Doss was her sixth of the season, four of which have come in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Doss' early goal gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead, a mark that would stand throughout the entire first half. At halftime, the Falcons held a narrow 1-0 lead while the defense stifled the opposition, limiting Shepherd to just two shot attempts in the first half.
In the second half, the Falcons offense continued to create even more offensive chances. Physical play in the first half carried over into the second half as numerous fouls were called, as well as three yellow cards issued.
After outshooting Shepherd 6-2 in the first half, the Falcons outshot the Rams by a 12-5 margin in the second half. Maintaining a 1-0 lead through the majority of the game, NDC tacked on another goal in the 82nd minute behind the foot of
Lytia Hart.
Hart settled a pass from Melton, and promptly ripped a shot to the back of the net, scoring to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. Hart's insurance goal gave the Falcons comfortable separation, leading to a 2-0 road win over the Shepherd Rams.
With the win, the Falcons pick up their fifth straight victory while improving to 9-3-1 overall, including an 8-2-1 record in MEC play.
Doss and Hart scored one goal each while Melton assisted on both goals. Meanwhile, goakeeper Sam Shoemaker made her return to net for the Falcons, making three saves in her 2015 debut.
