Box Score BUCKHANNON, West Virginia -- In a battle between two undefeated teams, the Notre Dame College Falcons fell just short against the host West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Wood Street Field. Neither team was able to score in regulation, thus forcing overtime, where the Bobcats would pull away with a narrow 1-0 victory.
It was a tale of two halves in many ways, as the Bobcats outplayed the Falcons in the first half. The Bobcats controlled the tempo and outshot the Falcons 9-2 in the first half, but sophomore
Samantha Shoemaker stood tall in net as she recorded five saves and allowed zero goals. WVW also took three corner kicks in the first half, while the Falcons attempted zero.
However, the Falcons flipped the script in the second half. NDC held the shot advantage in the second half, 7-5, and created more opportunities on offense, leading to six corner kicks.
Shoemaker and the Falcons defense continued to stifle the Bobcats, but the NDC offense struggled to score after recording 12 goals in their first three games this season.
The scoreless gridlock after 90 minutes of regulation then forced overtime. The Falcons outshot the Bobcats 2-1 in the extra period, but one shot was all the Bobcats needed as Colette Biondi scored to give WVW the 1-0 win.
With the loss, the Falcons suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons will compete next on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against the visiting West Liberty Hilltoppers. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
