Falcons pass first road test in MEC action

Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons continued their dominance in Mountain East Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Charleston on Wednesday evening.

The Falcons (3-0, 2-0) have now won 15 of 16 Mountain East Conference contests in the regular season, while the loss for the Golden Eagles (2-2-1, 1-1) snapped a brief two-game winning streak.

Notre Dame got on the board rather quickly, on Natalie Ockunzzi's goal just over eight and a half minutes into the contest to give the Falcons the early advantage.

Later in the half, Kathrine Beattie found the back of the net in the 33rd minute of the contest to give Notre Dame a 2-0 lead, which they took into the half.

Notre Dame fired off five more shots (8-5) than the Golden Eagles in the opening period of action, and they were able to clamp down defensively in the second period to put the game away. In the second period, the Golden Eagles fired off just one shot, to Notre Dame's nine.

Notre Dame's final goal came from sophomore Karla DiJohn in the 65th minute of the contest to help the Falcons pull away with the convincing victory.

The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, for another Mountain East Conference tilt as they head to Buckhannon, W.Va., to take on West Virginia Wesleyan. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
