Women's soccer comes from behind to beat Wheeling Jesuit 2-1

Box Score South Euclid, Ohio -- After winning their first game of the season by a score of 6-0, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team continued their winning ways with a come-from-behind victory over the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Saturday at Normandy Field, winning by a final score of 2-1.

The Falcons came into the match hot off of a blowout victory over Carlow University just one week prior, but quickly found that the Cardinals wouldn't be silenced as easily. In just the 13th minute of play, the Cardinals' Morgan Jacobson netted a goal off of a corner kick, giving WJU a 1-0 advantage.

Trailing for the first time all season, albeit just by one goal, the Falcons showed their resilience by dominating the shot totals, but had nothing to show for it early. Then in the 31st minute, sophomore Alexis Manoa stepped up for the Falcons as she scored via penalty kick, tying the game at one.

Despite outshooting the Cardinals 13-3 in the first half, both sides remained tied at one goal a piece at the halftime intermission.

However, the Falcons continued to create scoring opportunities in the second half, but struggled to net the go-ahead goal until late in the game. At the 78:59 mark, Manoa again came through for NDC, scoring her second goal of the game in the same fashion as she did the first: via penalty kick.

With a 2-1 lead and time winding down in the game, the Falcons continued to apply pressure to the Cardinals' offensive attack, limiting their shot opportunities. The Falcons outshot the Cardinals 24-5 on the day.

Eventually, the clock struck midnight for the Cardinals and the Falcons picked up their second win of the season in as many games, while also improving to 2-0 at home.

The Falcons will compete next on Wednesday, Sept. 17 on the road against the Charleston Golden Eagles in Charleston, West Virginia. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
