Volleyball battles, but drops consecutive matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game One

After dropping both matches on Friday night at the Mountain East/PSAC Crossover, the Falcons came out ready to redeem themselves against the Gannon University Golden Knights. However, the Golden Knights proved to be a tough challenge for NDC, ultimately beating the Falcons by a final score of 3-0.

In the first set, the Falcons quickly fell behind 12-3 and could never quite make a run of their own to trim the deficit, losing the set by a score of 25-11.

The Falcons began set number two with momentum, sticking with the Golden Knights and trailing just 5-4 early in the set. However, Gannon once again went on a run to break the set open with a 20-8 advantage and never looked back. The Falcons did respond late in the set with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 21-13, but it was too little, too late as Gannon bested NDC in the second set, 25-14.

In the third set, it was another case of too little, too late for the Falcons. With the match point on the line and the Falcons trailing 24-13, they went on a 4-0 run but it wasn't enough as the Golden Knights won the next point, and the set, by a score of 25-17.

Game Two

Erie, Pa. -- On day two of the Mountain East/PSAC Crossover, the Notre Dame College volleyball team played their second match of the day - and fourth match of the weekend - against the Edinboro Fighting Scots. While the Falcons won the first set, they were unable to repeat that performance in the next three sets, losing by a final score of 3-1.

With both sides tied 6-6 in the first set, the Falcons used a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from junior Alexia Koerkenmeier to give themselves some breathing room with a 10-6 lead. The Falcons continued to maintain their lead throughout the set, eventually leading 20-14 following an attack error by the Fighting Scots.

However, Edinboro would respond with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to just two, 21-19, but the Falcons remained composed and confident. NDC closed the door on any comeback hopes by the Fighting Scots, going on a 4-1 run to close out the set, winning by a final score of 25-20.

In the second set, the Falcons again took the early lead as they held a 14-9 lead midway through the set. Edinboro answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game, prompting a timeout by the Falcons. Later in the set, both teams were again tied - this time at 22 a piece. The Falcons scored the next point to take the narrow 23-22 lead, but it wasn't enough as the Fighting Scots finished the set on a 3-0 win, stealing the second set by a score of 25-23.

In the third and fourth sets, the Falcons lost by identical scores of 25-16 as Edinboro began to find its groove, closing out the match in four sets and beating the Falcons by a 3-1 final.

The Falcons will next compete on Tuesday, Sept. 16 on the road in Edinboro, Pennsylvania for a rematch with the Fighting Scots. The match is schedule to begin at 7 p.m.
