Box Score BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons were done in by a nine run first inning on the first day of action at the Mountain East Conference Tournament, in a 14-0 loss to Concord.
For the Falcons (24-21) the contest was their first in the post season as an NCAA-II Institution, while for the Mountain Lions (37-14) the victory gives them five in a row over the Falcons this season.
With the loss, Notre Dame has fallen into the consolation bracket, and will play in an elimination game against West Liberty on Friday morning, while Concord awaits the winner of West Virginia State and Urbana which will be played at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
The problems for the Falcons began in the first inning.
Matt Kastelic (7-5) who has anchored the NDC pitching staff all season long, had a rough outing. The Mountain Lions batted around ,sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, and Kastelic was only able to get two-thirds of the way through the frame before Concord plated nine runs to establish an early advantage.
Bret Blevins started the big inning with a RBI double, and he came home a few moments later on Joey Miller's run scoring single. Joe Camp delivered the second RBI double of the inning to score the next run, before Brad Sullivan added two more on a single. Jerrod Groves belted a RBI single, and two batters later, Kastelic was replaced by
Jeff Stover. The inning wasn't over just yet, as Blevins singled in two more runs and Miller drove in the final run on a base hit.
The NDC bullpen was able to keep the Mountain Lions off the board for the next five innings, before they added four more in the home half of the seventh. The inning was highlighted by Andrew Seigel's bases loaded triple. Concord added one more in the bottom of the eighth inning to wrap things up.
Kastelic took the loss, after allowing nine runs, only three of them earned on eight hits, through two-thirds of the first inning. Stover provided 4.1 strong innings of relief, allowing no runs on four hits while fanning two. Concord's Ryan Weatherholtz (8-4) was the winner, after tossing seven scoreless innings, and allowed just six hits.
Notre Dame's offensive attack produced eight hits, and individually, they were led by
Danny Beaver, and
Shane DeFranco. Beaver set the table for the Falcons, and went 2-for-4 with a pair of base hits, while DeFranco went 2-for-3 and came away with a double, which was NDC's only extra base hit.
The Falcons will square off against West Liberty (W.Va.) on Friday morning, in an elimination game at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
