Falcons fall in regular season finale

Notre Dame suffers two shutout losses to Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
HUDSON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons fell in both ends of Sunday's double header against Urbana, as they ended the regular season with a pair of shutout losses.

The Falcons (24-20, 22-17 MEC) dropped the first game, 4-0 to the Blue Knights (23-19, 20-14), before dropping the finale, 3-0. The losses dropped the Falcons down to the fifth seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament which begins next Thursday.

Game One:
Notre Dame didn't have many chances to score, as they were only able to get a pair of runners into scoring position throughout the contest.  Simon Davis (3-1) pitched a good game, but allowed three runs in the sixth inning on a trio of Urbana doubles to snap a scoreless tie.  The Blue Knights added another insurance run in the seventh inning to put the game away.

The Falcons were limited to just four hits throughout the game as well, as only Brian Blondeaux and Danny Beaver got to second base in the contest.  Notre Dame never had a runner reach third in the game either as Urbana starting pitcher Justin Robinson (4-1) never really gave NDC a chance.

Davis suffered a bit of a hard luck loss, as he kept the Blue Knights off the board through the first five innings, but ended up surrendering four runs on six hits over six innings of action and struck out eight in the process.  Robinson came away with the win, as he went the distance for the complete game shutout while striking out seven batters in the process.

Travis Smetana led the way for Notre Dame offensively, as he registered half of NDC's hits, going 2-for-3 in the opening contest.

Game Two:
The second contest game was a mirror image of the first, as runs were very tough to come by for both teams, and the Blue Knights used one big inning to pull away.

The starting pitchers stole the show again, as the game remained tied until Urbana blew up for three runs in the seventh inning. Zack LaRocca (2-5) worked his way out of a few jams early on, as he induced a trio of double plays, including a pair of inning enders.

NDC's best chance to score came in the bottom of the first inning.  TJ Lett reached with one out on a throwing error by pitcher Jackson Everman (3-4), before Keifer Quick stroked a single to left.  They both advanced later in the inning on a passed ball, but NDC was not able to capitalize.

In the seventh inning, the Blue Knights scored three times on four hits and capitalized on one Notre Dame error. The inning was highlighted by run scoring singles from both Nick Gallagher and Robert Tavone  Jr.

LaRocca took the loss in a strong effort on the hill.  He went the distance, and allowed all three runs on eight hits, struck out two and issued just two walks.  Everman went the distance for the complete game shutout victory, and allowed just three hits while fanning four.

Quick went 2-for-3 in the contest, giving him nine games with at least two hits, and 11 multi-hit games on the season.

While the regular season is over for the Falcons, they've secured one of the top six seeds in the inaugural Mountain East Conference tournament.  The Falcons are the fifth seed, and they'll square off against the second seeded Concord Mountain Lions on Thursday, May 8, in Beckley, W.Va. The time of the contest will be determined later this week.
