Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon against Wheeling Jesuit, and took another weekend series on the road in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons (15-11, 13-8 MEC) took the opening contest of the day, 7-5, before the Carindals (13-15, 13-11) salvaged a victory in the series, by taking the final game, 10-4 to avoid a weekend sweep. Sunday's split marked the third road series victory in conference play for NDC.
Game One:
It took a come from behind effort for the Falcons in game one. Notre Dame surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, and another in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead through five.
The Notre Dame comeback began in the top of the sixth inning, where the Falcons scored a pair of runs on two hits and capitalized on a pair of errors as well.
Austin Creer reached on an error by left fielder Mitch Ludewig's error, and he made his way to third on a single form
TJ Lett. A passed ball scored Creer, and
Danny Beaver's RBI single through the left side plated Lett.
The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, before the Falcons scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to force extra innings. The seventh started with a walked issued to
Brennan Singleton, before
Shane DeFranco singled to left field.
Austin Creer followed with a run scoring single to center. Beaver reached later in the inning on a fielder's choice, which allowed DeFranco to score the tying run.
In the eighth, Notre Dame seized control by scoring three times on two hits while taking advantage of two errors. The inning began with a single from
Ryan Sanders, and an error allowed
Keifer Quick to reach, putting runners at the corners, setting up a sac fly from Singleton to score Sanders. DeFranco then belted a two-run single to center to cap the inning.
Simon Davis (2-0) took the victory after allowing a run on three hits over two innings of relief. Garrett Sancomb (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over 1.2 innings of relief.
Shane DeFranco paced the Falcons offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in.
Game Two:
Notre Dame scored first in game two, plating their first run in the top of the first inning.
TJ Lett reached on base hit back up the middle. An errant pickoff attempt put him on second base, and
Keifer Quick drove him home on a single to center.
However, the Cardinals came right back with a four spot in the home half of the inning to take the lead, and never looked back. Tyler Kowalczyk drove in the first run on a RBI single, and Chad Ford singled through the right side to plate the next run, before Chad Ford belted a two-run single down the left field line to cap the inning.
The Cardinals drove in two more in the fourth inning and then essentially put the game away with a four-run fifth inning.
Notre Dame added single runs in the second, fifth, and seventh innings.
Danny Beaver reached on an infield single to score
Shane DeFranco in the top of the second. In the fifth inning,
Ryan Sanders stroked a two-out double down the line in left, and scored on Quick's second RBI single of the game. Quick struck one more time in the seventh inning with a sac fly to score
Jake Courtot.
Eithan Weiss (5-2) went the distance in a winning effort, allowing four runs on 11 hits and five in the victory. Zac LaRocca (1-3) allowed seven runs, only two earned on nine hits through four innings of work and took the loss.
Quick went 3-for-3 and drove in a trio of runs. Beaver went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, while Sanders went 2-for-3 and Courtot went 2-for-3 with a pair singles.
The Falcons will square off against Shepherd in more MEC road action next Saturday, April 12. The first pitch in the double header will be delivered at 1 p.m.
