NDC duo of Welch and Kastelic silence WJU Bats in Saturday sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Matt Kastelic and Jake Welch both turned in fantastic starting pitching performances on Saturday, as they combined to allow just a run on eight hits in Notre Dame's double header sweep of Wheeling Jesuit.

The Falcons (14-10, 12-7 MEC) won easily in the first contest, 6-1, and then took the nightcap, 1-0, in a game where Welch outdueled the Cardinals' (12-14, 12-10) Justin Fritts, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Game One:
Notre Dame took control early by scoring three times on a trio of hits in the top of the first inning. Danny  Beaver began the inning iwht a walk and made his way to second on a single from Jarlys Mejia.  Later in the inning, the Falcons struck with a little two-out thunder to take the advantage.  Jared Clovis stroked a run scoring single to center field, and Bryan Blondeaux followed with a RBI double down the left field line to plate the next run. A passed ball allowed Clovis to score shortly thereafter to cap the big inning.

The Falcons added two more just an inning later to take a commanding, 5-0, advantage. Tanner Dovsek reached on a one out walk, before Danny Beaver reached on second baseman Adam Young's error to put runners on second and third with one way.  Mejia made the error sting, as he followed with a big two-run single.

NDC added another in the fourth inning, as they capitalized on a pair of errors to cushion their lead. Brennan Singleton reached on shortstop Joe San Fellipo's error to start the inning.  The error got him to second base, before Troy Findlay's sac bunt pushed him over to third, and he scored on a passed ball.

Fresh off his no-hitter last Saturday in Avon, Ohio, Matt Kastelic (4-3), the reigning NCAA Division-II National Pitcher of the week was simply fantastic once again.  He went the distance, and allowed just an unearned run on five hits through seven innings of work, and struck out six along the way. Kastelic has allowed just three earned runs in his last four starts.

WJU starting pitcher Logan Hudson (3-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, only three earned on four hits in five innings of work.  The WJU defense had a rough time in the opener, as they committed four errors along the way.

Game Two:
Errors continued to plague the Cardinals in the second game. An error and a passed ball assisted the Falcons in the second inning of game two to plate the only run of the contest. Clovis started the inning with a walk, and then stole second base. A passed ball put Clovis on third, before Shane DeFranco reached on San Fellipo's error at short which brought Clovis home.

Notre Dame was held hitless through the first six innings of the contest, until Singleton stroked a one out single in the top of the seventh inning to break up Fritts's no-hit bid. NDC went into the bottom of the seventh ahead 1-0, and Welch never gave the Cardinals a chance, as he struck out the side to seal the deal.

While Fritts (1-2) pitched a terrific game, it was Welch (6-1) who came out the winner in game two, as he turned in his fourth complete game shutout of the season.  He limited the Cardinals to just three hits in game two, and struck out nine batters along the way. Welch has now allowed just two earned runs in his last four starts.

Mejia and Blondeaux led the way for Notre Dame offensively.  Mejia went 2-for-6 on the day with a pair of runs batted in, while Blondeaux went 2-for-5 with a RBI.  Beaver walked three times on the afternoon at the top of the order for NDC.

The Falcons will wrap up the weekend series with the Cardinals with a double header in Wheeling, W.Va., on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch will be delivered at 1 p.m.
