Falcons score another road series win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon against Fairmont State, and won their final road series of the season in conference play.

The Falcons (22-18, 20-15 MEC) used a late scoring surge and a terrific pitching performance in game one to come away with a 2-1 victory, before Fairmont State (14-27, 12-22), came away with a 1-0 victory in the second game to score their only win of the series.

Game One:
Notre Dame's Simon Davis (3-0) outdueled Fairmont State's Ryan Badertscher (1-5) in the first contest of the day.  The game was scoreless through three innings of action before FSU scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Nic Rush's double started the fourth inning, and he made his way to third after Randy Tallhamer's single.  Brian Coleman then bounced into a double play, which allowed Rush to score the game's first run.

Notre Dame answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. TJ Lett started the inning with an infield single and made his way to second on Keifer Quick's free pass. A passed ball allowed them both to advance, and Jarlys Meija reached on a fielder's choice to plate Lett, tying the game at 1-1. A throwing error allowed Mejia to reach third on the play. The next batter, Shane DeFranco delivered the eventual game winner, with a run scoring single to left which scored Mejia.

Fairmont State had the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, but Zach Gresch (1) retired the final two batters of the inning to keep the lead intact.

Davis came away with the victory for Notre Dame, after allowing just a run on six hits while fanning four over six innings of action while Gresch tossed a scoreless seventh inning to get the save. The Falcons came away with the win despite recording just three hits.

Game Two:
Notre Dame spoiled a terrific start by Zack LaRocca (2-4) who threw a two-hitter but took the loss despite the strong effort. In addition, the Falcons left seven men on base.

The Falcons had chances to score early on, but left five runners stranded in scoring position over the first three innings of the contest, and were never able to capitalize, despite out hitting Fairmont State, 5-2 in the game.

Fairmont State scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Swauger was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and made his way to second on a Wine's single to left.  The next batter, Butts, reached on a fielder's choice, and an errant throw allowed Swauger to score the game's only run.

Quick and Mejia both produced a pair of singles, going 2-for-3 in the process. LaRocca went the distance and gave up just a run on two hits with one strikeout but came away with the loss.

The Falcons are in action again next weekend, when they wrap up their regular season with a weekend double header at home against Urbana. The first pitch in game one on Saturday, May 3, All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
