Falcons earn a split with WV State after a walk off win in series finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio -- Jarlys Mejia's eighth inning walk off single scored Keifer Quick to put the Falcons over the Yellow Jackets, 2-1 in the series finale on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons took a split in the weekend series at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Falcons (19-17, 17-14 MEC) lost the opener, 4-1, before coming from behind to win the extra inning finale in game two over the Yellow Jackets (23-15, 19-13), 2-1, on Mejia's game winner.

Game One:
A trio of costly errors hurt the Falcons in game one.  In the top of the second inning, Noah Blackhurst reached on Bryan Blondeaux's error in left field, and he reached second on the play. A groundout moved Blackhurst over to third and he scored on Andrew Pickering's sac fly to snap the scoreless tie.

The Yellow Jackets then capitalized on another error in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three times to take a 4-0 advantage.  Jack Hudson drove in the first run of the game on a RBI double to center field. Pickering followed with a run scoring single to right field, and Zach Claxton reached on a fielder's choice to score final run of the big frame.

Notre Dame scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrew Hurd belted single to center field to start the inning, and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Shane DeFranco followed with a RBI single back up the middle to score Hurd.

Jake Welch (6-3) allowed four runs, only two earned on five hits and fanned five while going the distance in the loss.  Tyler Hall (6-2) held the Falcons to just a run on three hits over six innings in a winning effort and Josh Falbo (8) slammed the door in the seventh inning with a perfect relief appearance to grab the save.

Game Two:
Runs were tough to come by for both teams in game two. West Virginia State scored in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Their run came with two outs, when Blackhurst belted a RBI double to score Eric Craft.

The 1-0 lead was safe until the Falcons knotted things up in the top of the fourth. Keifer Quick and Ryan Sanders started the inning with back-to-back walks, and they both advanced on Jarlys Mejia's sac bunt. Travis Smetana's groundout plated Quick a few moments later to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams had chances to score down the stretch, but Notre Dame capitalized in the eighth inning.  Quick started the inning with a beautiful bunt base hit, which prompted pitcher Josh Falbo's (2-1) errant throw down the right field line, which put Quick on second base.  Sanders's groundout pushed Quick to third, and Mejia won the game moments later with a walk off base hit back up the middle to score the winning run.

Falbo took the loss after coming on with the potential go ahead run in scoring position in the seventh, and allowed just a run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning, while Eric Napoli (1-0) took the victory after allowing just a hit in two scoreless innings in relief.  Simon Davis turned in an excellent start for the Falcons, going six innings and surrendered a run on seven hits.

The series split was big for the Falcons, as they did not lose any ground in the race for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament.  Heading into Saturday's games, the Falcons were ahead of the seventh place Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit by 5.5 games, and trailed the fifth place Hilltoppers of West Liberty by just two games.

The Falcons are not in action again until they face Fairmont State in more MEC action on Friday, April 25. The first pitch game one of the double header in Fairmont, W.Va., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
