Matt Kastelic blanks Yellow Jackets as Falcons split twin bill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio – Notre Dame right-hander Matt Kastelic tossed a complete game shutout in game one of Friday's double header, as the Falcons split their twin bill with West Virginia State at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Falcons (18-16, 16-13 MEC) took the first game in a 6-0 shutout victory, while the Yellow Jackets (22-14, 18-12) used a few big innings to take game two, 7-2.

Game One:
Like the opener in Thursday's twin bill against West Liberty, the first game was dominated by both starting pitchers in the early going.  There were no runs through three and a half innings, until the Notre Dame offense opened things up in the home half of the fourth inning.

The Falcons continued to do their damage with two outs, which continued another theme from Thursday.  Ryan Sanders started the two out rally in the fourth with a double down the line in left, and scored moments later on Andrew Hurd's RBI base hit to left to snap the scoreless tie. Singles from Bryan Blondeaux and Shane DeFranco followed to load the bases, and a wild pitch plated Hurd later in the inning. Tanner Dovsek capped the big frame with a two-run double to left center.

Notre Dame added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, and did so again with two outs.  Blondeaux and Dovsek ripped singles, and Danny Beaver drove them both home on a two-out triple to right field.

After working out of some early trouble in the top of the first inning, Matt Kastelic (5-4) scored his third complete game shutout victory of the season.  Kastelic allowed six hits in the win while fanning three batters in the process. Russell Thompson (5-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in all seven innings of work.

Seven Falcons hit safely at least once in the contest, while Beaver, Blondeaux and Dovsek all hit safely twice.

Game Two:
Crooked numbers posted in frames four and six paved the way for a Yellow Jackets victory in game two. WV State took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, when Cody Smith scored on Anthony Payne's RBI groundout.

Notre Dame tied things up just an inning and a half later, when Sanders belted his fifth bomb of the season, a solo smash over the wall in left. The Yellow Jackets snapped the 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning, on Zach Claxton's two out single to right field which plated a pair of runs.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the sixth inning with a trio of runs on five hits to take a commanding, 6-1 lead, and they added another run in the seventh. Their big sixth inning was highlighted by another big hit from Claxton, who ripped a two-run double down the right field line, and Smith's infield single which scored Claxton.

The Falcons scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Smetana began the inning with a walk, and came around to score on Keifer Quick's RBI single to center.

Devin Bowles (2-1) went the distance for WV State, and picked up the win after allowing just a pair of runs on only two hits while fanning six along the way. Zach Gresch (2-4) took the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work.

Quick finished the day with a pair of hits, and has now hit safely in his last seven games, which is the longest active streak on the team.  Sanders's two-hit game in the first contest gives him 12 multi-hit games on the season.

The Falcons will finish the weekend series, with a double header on Saturday, April 19. They'll wrap up their series with West Virginia State in another double header at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, and the first pitch in game one will be delivered at 1 p.m.
