Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. --
Simon Davis turned in a strong start in game two of NDC's double header on Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons split their twin bill against Shepherd, ending the Rams' 16 winning streak in the process.
The Falcons (16-14, 14-11 MEC) had a big day offensively. They lost in a close contest to the Rams (25-8, 23-5) as their comeback was cut short in an 8-7 loss in game one, before scoring early and often to take game two, 9-4.
Game One:
The Rams stormed out to a big lead early on, plating a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Shepherd then put up a four spot in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 advantage, but Notre Dame came back in the final few frames to make things interesting.
Bryan Blondeaux started the fifth inning with a double to left center and scored NDC's first run a few moments later on
Travis Smetana's groundout.
The Falcons struck again in the sixth inning, scoring four times on three hits, and did all of their damage with two outs. Smetana stroked a two-run single to score
Keifer Quick and
Ryan Sanders, and
Shane DeFranco followed with a two-run single of his own to bring NDC within three runs.
NDC then scored two more in the seventh to come within a run, but that was as close as they would get.
TJ Lett scored the first run after Sanders reached on an error, and he scored later in the inning on Blondeaux's RBI single.
Shepherd's Ryan Pansch (3-3) allowed just a run on four hits over five innings of action while fanning five to score the win. Sam Crater (2) earned the save while presevering the lead in the seventh.
Jake Welch (6-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings of action.
Lett, Blondeaux and DeFranco paced the NDC offense with two hits apiece, while Smetana drove in three runs and DeFranco drove in a pair.
Game Two:
The Falcons mounted a sizeable lead in game two, while
Simon Davis (2-0) went to work and kept NDC ahead by neutralizing the Rams' offense.
Notre Dame scored first in the home half of the first inning. Lett reached on an infield single with one out, and came home on another run scoring base hit from Blondeaux. The Rams answered in the bottom of the inning with a run to tie the game.
NDC opened things up with a trio of runs on two hits in the top of the third. The inning began with an error that put Lett on first base, and Quick followed with a single through the left side. Blondeaux's sacrifice bunt pushed them both over before
Jarlys Mejia walked to load the bases.
Andrew Hurd then delivered a game changing three-run double to give NDC the lead.
The Falcons added two more runs in the fifth inning. Hurd struck again with a run scoring single, plating Mejia, and
Danny Beaver brought in the next run on a RBI base hit to score Hurd. NDC plated their final run in the sixth inning as Hurd drove in his fifth run of the game on a sac fly to score Quick.
Davis came one out away from going the distance, as he allowed four runs on six hits over 6.2 innings of work to score the victory. Mac West (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, one earned on four hits in three innings of action.
Hurd had a big game for NDC, going 2-for-3 with a run and drove in five, while Lett went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Quick delivered a pair of hits in a 2-for-3 performance with three runs and two driven in.
The Falcons will return to MEC action at home, when they begin a six game home stand on Thursday, April 17. They'll take on West Liberty at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, and the first pitch will be delivered at 1 p.m.
