ATHENS, W.Va. -- Early offensive production paced the Concord Mountain Lions in both ends of their double header sweep of the Notre Dame Falcons on Saturday afternoon, with 9-2 and 5-2 victories.
For the Falcons (5-4, 3-2 MEC), the sweep brought an end to their five game winning streak, while for the Mountain Lions (10-3, 6-0) was their sixth in a row, as they remain unbeaten in conference play.
Game One:
In game one, Concord built an early lead and never trailed, as they came away with a 5-2 victory. The Mountain Lions pushed across single runs in the first and third innings, before taking a 5-0 lead after plating a trio of runs in the fourth.
Andrew Seigel started the home half of the first inning with a base hit, made his way to second on a base hit from Bret Blevins, before a wild pitch put him on third and he scored the game's first run on Joey Miller's sacrifice fly.
Brandon Costa began the third inning with a single, and came around to score on the second base hit of the came from Blevins to double the Concord lead. The Mountain Lions went to work again in the fourth inning, scoring three times on three hits. Joe Camp belted an RBI double to get the party started, which was followed by a two-run single from Eli Flynn.
Notre Dame had been held to just a pair of hits through the first five innings of action, before they used the long ball to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning.
Travis Smetana kept the inning alive on a two-out single, setting up a two-run homer for the reigning Mountain East Conference Hitter of the Week,
Ryan Sanders. The homer was his third in his last four games.
However, NDC was not able to draw any closer as Concord closed out the victory.
Zach Gresch (1-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings of work, while Concord's Ryan Weatherholtz (3-0) came away with the win after tossing all seven innings, and allowed just two runs on four knocks.
Game Two:
Concord set the tone early in the second contest, as they plated a half dozen runs in the bottom of the first inning on seven hits. Blevins and Miller got things going for Concord in the big inning on back-to-back RBI doubles, before Camp reached on Smetana's error at short which allowed another run to score. TJ Brockway then belted a two-run single to left center field, before Costa finished the big inning on a base hit back up the middle.
The Mountain Lions would add single runs in the third fourth and sixth innings to pull away. Notre Dame produced it's first run in the top of the fourth inning, when Smetana smashed a two-out RBI base hit through the left side, scoring
Shane DeFranco in the process. The Falcons scored their final run on another two out hit. This time, it was
Keifer Quick who delivered, ripping a two-out double to score Sanders.
Tyler Coyle (2-1) went the distance and earned the victory for Concord, allowing jus the two runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings of action.
Jake Welch (2-1) took the loss for NDC, after surrendering eight runs, only of three of them earned, on 11 hits while fanning seven through five frames.
Quick paced the Falcons on the day at the dish, hitting .429 (3-for-7) on the afternoon with a run scored and one of NDC's two hits for extra bases. Sanders had another nice day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 (.400) with NDC's lone homer, he scored twice and knocked in two.
The Falcons will meet the Mountain Lions again on Sunday afternoon for another double header to finish the series. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
