Snow shortened series win

NDC caps weekend series with 9-5 victory

Box Score BUCKANNON, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons took the tail end of a snow shortened series against West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon, in a 9-5 victory over the Bobcats. (Box)

For the Falcons (7-7) have now won two out of their first three weekend series in Mountain East Conference play, while the Bobcats (3-5) have dropped their first two series in MEC action with the loss. They were supposed to play two games, but the second half of the scheduled twin bill was cancelled due to snow.

The offense came early and often for the Falcons, who plated four runs in the first inning, and scored eight of their nine runs over the first two frames to set the tone, as they never trailed at any point throughout the contest.

Travis Smetana started the game with a walk before Danny Beaver's sacrifice bunt pushed him into to scoring position.  Ryan Sanders followed with his first of two doubles on the afternoon, as his run scoring two-bagger plated Smetana to snap the scoreless tie.

Keifer Quick reached on a fielder's choice, and Sanders was tagged out on the play, but Quick stole second base and scored moments later on Jared Clovis's RBI single.  Bryan Blondeaux followed with a walk, and Shane DeFranco reached on an error to load the bases, before Troy Findlay was hit by a pitch to score the next run, and an errant throw allowed Blondeaux to score the final run of the inning.

NDC sent all nine batters to the plate again in the top of the second inning to plate their next four runs, all with two outs, and took an 8-0 lead.  Sanders got things going with a double to left center, and Quick drove him in with a single to left.  Clovis extended the inning when he reached on an error and Blondeaux responded with a RBI single, before DeFranco capped the big inning with a two-run single to center.

The Bobcats scored a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the second, before adding two more on three hits in the third to cut the deficit in half (8-4), but the NDC lead was never really in jeopardy. WV Wesleyan scored another run in the home half of the fifth inning, but the Falcons responded rather quickly in the top of the sixth. Clovis smacked a one out double to right center, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Blondeaux's groundout.

Sanders, Clovis and DeFranco led the charge for the NDC offense with two hits each, with Sanders counting for two of NDC's hits for extra bases.  Blondeaux and DeFranco each drove in a pair of runs for the Falcons and Clovis scored three times.

Zack LaRocca started the game for the Falcons, giving up five runs, only three earned on seven hits through 4.2 innings of action.  Simon Davis (1-0) finished the game for the Falcons.  He tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit while fanning two to get the win.

The Falcons are in action again on Wednesday, March 19, when they head to Consol Energy Field in Washington, Pa., to take on California (Pa.). The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
