NDC Dethrones King

Falcon offense erupts in double header sweep of King U.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The Notre Dame Falcon offense produced big numbers on Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons scored 18 runs in a double header sweep of King University.

The Falcons (2-2) outscored the Tornado (3-11-1), 18-6 on the afternoon, returning the favor from Saturday, when King had all the fun as they swept the Falcons, and outscored them, 22-4 in the process.

NDC's offense was alive and well on Sunday, as they scored 18 times on 22 hits, including a pair of homeruns, and a total of seven extra base hits.

Game One:

King took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Tom Hooker walked to start it, and made his way to second on a balk before stealing third.  J.D. Wallace walked with one out to put runners at the corners, setting up King's first run.  Wallace attempted to steal second base and was thrown out on the play, but Hooker scored from third in the process.

The Falcons rallied and plated five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Sanders started the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before Keifer Quick walked.  Brennan Singleton pushed them both into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, setting up Andrew Hurd's two-run double down the line in left to give the Falcons a two-run lead. Jared Clovis followed with a base hit, and Bryan Blondeaux opened the flood gates with a big three-run smash to left, his first of the season.

Notre Dame followed their five-run fourth with a four-run fifth to take a commanding, 9-1 lead.  Sanders was the fire-starter again, beginning the rally with a one-out base hit. Quick responded with a single to center field to put runners at first and second base for Singleton.  Singleton smashed a double to left-center field, scoring both Sanders and Quick. Hurd then drove in his third run of the game on a double to left which plated Singleton.  A wild pitch put Hurd on third, and he scored on Jared Clovis's sacrifice fly to cap the inning.

The Tornado was able to add single runs in the fifth and eighth innings, but it was not enough as the Falcons used the two big frames to pull away.

Jake Welch (1-0) scored the victory for the Falcons after allowing just a pair of runs on just two hits while fanning eight in the process. Simon Davis (1) earned the save after allowing just a run on a hit with three strikeouts over three innings of work.  King's Reiss Stanley (0-2) took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in four innings of work.

Four Falcons registered multi-hit games in the win, and Clovis led the way with a 3-for-3 performance.  Beaver, Sanders, and Hurd all hit safely twice.

Game Two:

The NDC offense got started right away in game two, plating a trio of runs in the top of the first inning. Danny Beaver and Jarlys Mejia started the inning on back-to-back base hits, and Sanders reached on a fielder's choice to bring Beaver in for the game's first run. Singleton walked to load the bases, and Hurd was able to draw a free pass with the bases full to plate Mejia. Blondeaux then brought the final run of the inning home on a sacrifice fly to score Sanders.

Notre Dame posted another crooked number in the second inning, scoring three times on the strength of trio of doubles and a two-run bomb.  Beaver belted a one-out double to left-center, and came home moments later on Sanders's two-run shot to left, his first homer of the season.  Singleton kept the inning alive on a two-out double to left, and he scored shortly thereafter on Clovis's two-bagger to complete the three-run frame.

King was able to cut the deficit in half after plating a pair of runs in the second and one more in the fifth inning, but Notre Dame would get all three of those runs back.  TJ Lett scored the first run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, and NDC scored twice in the seventh on Quick's two-run double to center which scored Mike Ferguson and Blondeaux.

Zack LaRocca (1-0) took the victory in game two after allowing just three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of action, while King's Mitch Stophel (0-1) did not make it out of the second inning, lasting only 1.2 innings and was tagged for six runs on five hits in the loss.

Clovis, Beaver and Sanders had huge days at the dish, pacing the NDC offense.  Clovis led the way with five hits in the twin bill, going 5-for-9, while Beaver did a nice job of setting the table in a 4-for-7 performance at the plate and Sanders went 4-for-9 with four runs and three RBI's on the afternoon.

The Falcons will be in action again on Saturday, March 1, as they begin Mountain East Conference play on the road against Glenville State (W.Va.).  First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
