Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons ended their 2014 season on Friday evening, in a hard fought four set loss to Charleston.
The Falcons (7-21, 5-11 MEC) fell out of contention for the Mountain East Tournament with the loss, while the victory for the Golden Eagles (9-18, 8-8) was their sixth at home, and secured them a spot in the MEC tournament.
Despite the loss, the Falcons gave the Golden Eagles all they could handle. UC took the opening set by a slight margin, in a 25-22 victory. Notre Dame did very well in the second set, and came away with a 25-15 victory to even the match. The Golden Eagles outlasted the Falcons in the pivotal third set, 25-20, before taking another closely contested set, 25-21, to win the match.
The Falcons had a balanced offensive attack, with four Falcons tallying six or more kills.
Angela Bush led the way with seven kills on the night, while
Lindsay Shirilla,
Brooke Mako and
Kristen Hill all contributed with six kills each.
Tawny Flareau paced the Falcons with 17 assists on the night while
Shelby Regiec added nine to go along with four service aces. Shea Thayer was a force at the net defensively with five blocks.
Tawnia Almaraz led the Falcons with 21 digs, while Flareau added 18,
Morgan Toman added 17, and
Ryan Moriarty contributed with 10.
The loss brings an end to the 2014 season for the Falcons.
