Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Notre Dame Falcons fell to the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA-II Tournament.
The loss for the Falcons (14-3-2) brings an end to a remarkable season, while the win for the Bobcats (13-4-2) advances them to the second round against the hosts, East Stroudsburg, on Sunday, Nov. 16.
In the opening half, both defenses played well, as shots were very difficult to come by. The Falcons fired off just two shots, while the Bobcats had four.
The lone goal in the contest came in the 21st minute, as WV Wesleyan's Kristi Dalton found the back of the net on a header, which came on Abbey Lindblad's corner kick.
Notre Dame held a terrific advantage in the second half in corner kicks, as they had five, while the Bobcats did not have any in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
The Falcons had three shots on goal on the day, as
Maranda Melton,
Alexis Manoa and
Sabrina Mottershead all fired off shots on goal, but WV Wesleyan goalkeeper Lauren Duncan came away with a trio of saves to preserve the shutout victory.
The Falcons had two of their shots on goal in the second half, where they outshot the Bobcats, 5-1, but could not come away with the game tying goal.
Despite the loss, the Falcons still had a terrific season, as they captured both the Mountain East Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles. Friday afternoon's contest marked their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, and it was the fourth meeting of the season between NDC and West Virginia Wesleyan.
