Falcons sweep Yellowjackets at home, 3-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- After losing at home on Tuesday night to Urbana University, the Notre Dame College volleyball team returned to Murphy Gymnasium on Friday night in hopes of getting back on the winning track. Due to a strong team performance, the Falcons were able to do just that, as they SWEPT?? Mountain East Conference opponent West Virginia State, 3-0.

The Falcons came out with a spark beneath them, outplaying the Yellowjackets early in the first set. NDC led the set by a score of 23-13 before a late comeback by WVS cut the score to 24-19. However, the Falcons ended the opposition's run right there, winning the first set by a score of 25-19.

The second set was much more competitive, as both sides came out eager to capture the momentum. The Falcons won nine of the first 14 points to take a 9-5 lead, and later a 13-8 lead, but the Yellowjackets responded. A 5-1 run by WVS cut the deficit to 14-13, but the Falcons refused to surrender the lead. Junior Lindsay Shirilla recorded a huge block for the Falcons to give them a four-point lead again, 19-15, but the set was far from over.

After NDC took a 22-16 lead in the second set, the Yellowjackets went on a 8-2 run to tie the set at 24. However, the Falcons delivered when they most needed to, winning the next two points, and the set, by a score of 26-24.

NDC carried its strong play into the third set and convincingly beat the Yellowjackets 25-14, thus winning the match by a 3-0 score.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-11 on the season, including 3-3 in MEC play and 3-1 at home.

The Falcons will next compete on Friday, Oct. 10 in Athens, West Virginia against Concord University. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
