Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Playing their third-to-last home match of the 2014 campaign, the Notre Dame College volleyball team hosted the visiting Shepherd University Rams on Friday night at Murphy Gymnasium. Despite playing a team that was tied for second in the Mountain East Conference standings coming in to the match, the Falcons thrived in the underdog role, sweeping the match by a score of 3-0.
The Falcons started off the match strong in the first set, using momentum from the home crowd in their favor. NDC played with confidence and chemistry, and perhaps surprised the Rams with their talent as they took the first set, 25-23.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Rams fought back in the second set, taking a 12-8 lead that forced Falcons head coach
Mark Ridley to call a timeout. Following the timeout, NDC returned to their first-set form, as they went on a 13-8 run to take a narrow 21-20 lead. With the Falcons leading 21-20, Shepherd called a timeout to regroup. However, the timeout didn't turn the tide for the Rams, as the Falcons went on to win the set, 25-20.
After winning the first two sets, the Falcons refused to take their foot off the pedal. NDC jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the third set and never looked back, winning the set 25-14, and the match 3-0.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-3 at home this season while picking up what was easily their most impressive victory of the season.
The Falcons will have a short turnaround as they compete again tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 25) at home against Fairmont State University. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
