Falcons battle to a draw

NDC ties WV Wesleyan

Box Score

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons played into double overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Mueller Field, and came away with a 1-1 tie against West Virginia Wesleyan.

The draw for the Falcons (8-1-2, 7-1-2 MEC) snapped a six-match winning streak at home this season, while the draw for the Bobcats (7-2-2, 5-2-2) leaves them unbeaten against Notre Dame this season, as they defeated the Falcons in their first match of the season.

Shots were tough to come by on both sides early on, as both teams performed well in the early goings. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after one period of action. In the first half, the Bobcats limited Notre Dame's chances to score, as NDC fired off only two shots.

Notre Dame was able to draw first blood, however, scoring in the 58th minute. Alex DeFilippo nearly scored just before Notre Dame's goal on a breakaway opportunity, but had the scoring chance denied. A nice corner kick from Alexis Manoa followed, which set up a header from Jillian Doss to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage.

The lead held for Notre Dame until Wesleyan got on the board in the 67th minute of the contest. Colette Biondi fired off a shot from the right side, from about 30 yards out, and found the back of the net to knot things up at 1-1.

Both teams narrowly missed opportunities to score through the final 22 minutes of the second period, setting up overtime. Wesleyan fired off one shot in the first overtime, while Notre Dame got off two, including one on goal, but neither side registered a shot in the final overtime period.

The Bobcats fired off four more shots (12-8) than the Falcons on the afternoon, but Notre Dame had more corner kicks, holding a 5-3 advantage in that category.

The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they head to Shepherdstown, W.Va., for another Mountain East Conference match against the Rams. The contest is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
