Box Score WHEELING, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team used late-game heroics to pick up a 2-1 overtime win over the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field. Last-minute goals from freshman
Jillian Doss and sophomore
Megan O'Connor tied the game and won the game, respectively, to give the Falcons an important road and Mountain East Conference win over the Cardinals.
The Cardinals and Falcons were gridlocked early on in the match, with both sides pressing for the early advantage. However, it was the Cardinals who struck first as a goal from Nikki Hilliard gave WJU a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Trailing by one on the road, the Falcons battled adversity and responded in the second half with more offensive chances. Unable to convert on scoring opportunities early in the second half, the clock began to wind down and the Falcons found themselves trailing with just minutes remaining in the game.
After scoring the game-winning goal in Wednesday's win over Charleston, freshman
Jillian Doss stepped up big again for the Falcons, scoring an 86th minute goal to tie the game at one, with the assist from sophomore
Alexis Manoa.
Doss' goal forced a 10-minute overtime, where reigning MEC Player of the Year
Megan O'Connor scored in the 98th minute to lift the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 8-1-1 on the season, including a 6-1-1 mark in conference play.
"We feel we controlled the game throughout and were disappointed when we gave up a goal against the run of play," said head coach Mike Shiels. "We knew our first goal would eventually come and once we got one, the second would come."Â "With the exception of a couple of counterattacks we felt pretty comfortable. Â I'm just delighted for the girls."The Falcons will next compete on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at home against West Virginia Wesleyan. NDC's only loss of the season was to WVW in overtime back on Sept. 20.Â
The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
