Notre Dame College prevailed 39-19 in a hard fought D2 marquee match against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on a beautiful fall day on the Notre Dame College campus, playing on Mueller Field.
In front of a large crowd for NDC Rugby Welcome Weekend the NDC Falcon's controlled possession for much of the match and dominated most phases of play to secure the win. NDC went up early with a try by sophomore #8 Tom Walsh at the 4 minute mark, the conversion was missed leaving NDC up 5-0. Defense was the key as NDC held IUP scoreless stopping all of their hard running crashes. At the 33rd minute NDC was knocking at the five meter line and Sophomore Hooker Everett Smith smashed the ball in for a try and another missed conversion put NDC up 10-0 which held through to the half.
The second half started again as defensive struggle and at 6:50 into the half IUP was able to break through the NDC defense for a long try and missed conversion putting the score at NDC 10- IUP 5. NDC answered back and at the 10:53 mark NDC Hooker Everett Smith gain took a try in under the post and the conversion was made putting NDC up 17-5. IUP was not going to go unheard and at the 15 minute mark IUP again ran along try in followed by a conversion to bring the score to NDC 17-IUP 12.
Hard running on attack followed by aggressive rucking was the hallmark of both teams, but at the 19:49 mark IUP was penalized for offsides and NDC capitalized with a 35 meter penalty kick by freshman Tristan Wasil putting NDC up 20-12. IUP answered back at the 25:07 mark with a try putting the score at NDC 20-IUP 19. This was a wake-up call to NDC playing in front a great home crowd that included the Falcon marching band. Not letting the home fans down, the final 15 minutes were dominated by NDC with 2 try's by standout freshman scrumhalf Corey Graham and a third try by freshman Lachlan Rushkin to bring home the win NDC 39-IUP19.
