SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons rallied to win an exciting battle in their home opener on Tuesday evening, defeating Ursuline, 3-2, in their home opener.
The Falcons (2-12) snapped a six game losing streak with the victory in front of an electric crowd, while the loss for the Arrows (3-5) brought a brief two game winning streak to an end.
NDC dropped the first two sets of the evening, before rallying to tie things up by winning sets three and four, and took a 15-12 decision in the final set to score the victory.Â
The opening set was tightly contested at the very beginning. The two sides battled to a 19-19 tie, before the Arrows rallied to score four straight points to take the lead, and never looked back, winning the opening set 25-20.
While the two teams went back-and-forth for the first eight points of the second set, the story of the set was Ursuline's incredible 10-0 run, which gave them a 16-6 lead. The Falcons did not go down quietly, as they narrowed the deficit to three (17-14), but that was as close as the Arrows would allow them to get, as they took the second set, 25-18.
With their backs against the wall, the Falcons immediately took control in the third set. After the two teams traded the first two points, Notre Dame ran off eight straight points to take a commanding lead. Ursuline was able to trim the deficit to five (10-5), before NDC scored 15 out of the next 20 points to keep the match alive with a 25-10 victory.Â
Notre Dame scored five out of the first six points in the fourth set to take an early lead, but Ursuline hung around, and stayed with Notre Dame. The Arrows were able to draw within two (16-14) before the Falcons went on a 9-3 run to take a 25-17 victory and force a fifth set.
The final set was tightly contested the entire way through. The Falcons and Arrows were tied at 11-11, before NDC ran off three straight points, and eventually won, 15-12.
