CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons dropped a pair of matches on their first day of action at the Cal (Pa.) Vulcan Invitational on Friday night.
The Falcons (0-6) entered the tournament, looking for their first victory of the season, but fell in three sets to both the hosts, Cal Pa., and Clarion University.Â
In their first match of the day, NDC played well, and hit .240 in the opening set, but fell to the Vulcans, 25-18. NDC was then beaten by the hosts, 25-10, and 25-12 to close out the first match of the day.Â
Shelby Regiec had 11 assists in the opening match to lead the Falcons, and paced them defensively with 12 digs.Â
Morgan Toman also came away with double digit digs, registering 10 in the first contest, while
Lindsay Shirilla led the Falcons with six kills.
In their second match of the day, the Falcons started slowly, but got stronger as the match continued against Clarion. NDC dropped the opening set, 25-12, before falling in the second set, 25-18, and came up just short in the final set, 25-20.Â
Regiec had another big match, delivering 23 assists against Clarion, giving her 34 on the afternoon, and she came away with seven kills to go along with eight digs.Â
Taylor Thomas led the Falcons with nine kills against Clarion and hit .381 in the match, while Brittany Perrot added a team high, 13 digs.
The Falcons will finish up at the Vulcan Invitational, with a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon. They are scheduled to take on Davis and Elkins (W.Va.) at 11 a.m., and they'll finish with Long Island Post (N.Y.) at 2 p.m.Â
