Streak snapped

Falcons snap losing skid in split with Vulcans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons brought a six game losing streak to an end on Tuesday afternoon, as they split a double header with Cal (Pa.), falling 3-2 in game one, but came back to win the second game, 1-0.

The split for the Falcons (11-20) came against an opponent riding high, and ranked 27th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll. The split for the Vulcans (22-8) snapped a six game winning streak.

Runs were tough to come by for both clubs, as they two teams combined to score six runs on 27 hits over 19 innings of action.  The Falcons fell in 12 innings in game one, losing their fourth straight one run game but they returned the favor in the finale with a 1-0 victory.

For the third game in a row, the Falcons were the first ones to score, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Jarlys Mejia worked his way into a full count, before drawing  a leadoff walk.  Jon Koepf sacrificed him to second, and Mejia scored on Austin Creer's two-out single to right field.

The Vulcans tied the contest in the home half of the third inning, when Derrik Zeroski came around to score on a one-out double from Matt Peters.

The rest of the contest was dominated by pitching.  The Vulcans had a great opportunity to win the game in their final at bat in the seventh inning, but Zach Gresch waived his magic wand and worked his way out of a jam.  They had the bases loaded with one out, but could not score as Gresch induced a pair of ground balls that produced outs, forcing extra innings.

Zeroes were posted on the board for both squads in extra frames until the Falcons snapped the 1-1 tie in the top of the twelfth inning.  Pat Ross brought in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly which scored Brennan Singleton

The lead was short-lived, as the Vulcans put together a rally to win it in their final at bat.  With one on and two away, Kyle Mann was hit by a pitch, and Justin Taylor walked to load the bases, setting up Chuck Gasti's game winning two-run single to center field.

Gresch pitched a great game for NDC, tossing seven strong innings, and allowed just a run on seven hits, but did not factor into the decision.  Kevin Beduhn (1-2) took the loss, allowing a pair of runs on two hits over 4.2 innings of action out of the pen.

NDC hung to win the second contest, 1-0, on the strength of a terrific pitching performance from Tyler DeCrapio (2-3).  DeCrapio blanked the Vulcans, and went the distance, allowing just five hits while fanning four in the process.

The Falcons scored their lone run in the top of the first inning. Three consecutive singles from Mejia, Koepf and Jesse Bartle started the top of the first, and Eric Mathews drove in the only run of the contest when he knocked in Mejia on a sacrifice fly.

Bartle had a huge day at the plate for NDC, recording multiple hits in both games, going 5-for-9 on the day.  Mejia was productive at the top of the order as well for NDC, reaching three times in the opening contest and scored the team's lone run in the second.

The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, April 13, for their home opener, as they take on Salem International (W.Va.) at the Pipeyard in Lorain, Ohio.  Game one of the twin bill is schedule for a 1 p.m. start.
