Oilers slide by Falcons

Falcons drop another tough one on the road

Box Score
FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons saw a four run lead slip away against Findlay on Monday afternoon, as the Oilers scored three times in the ninth inning to beat the Falcons, 9-8.

The loss for the Falcons (10-19) was their fifth in a row, while the victory for the Oilers (12-15) was their second in their last three contests.

The bats were busy for both clubs, as the Oilers and Falcons combined to score 17 runs on 20 hits, each team coming away with 10 hits apiece.

NDC was able to draw first blood in the first half inning of the contest.  Jarlys Mejia started the game with a free pass, and made his way to third on Jon Koepf's single, which was his first of four hits in the game.  Mejia then stole home to give NDC a 1-0 lead.

The Oilers took the lead in the home half of the first inning.  A throwing error allowed the first run of the frame, and then Tommy Roush hit a solo shot to give the Oilers a 2-1 advantage.

Notre Dame countered with their first of two three-run frames in the top of the second.  A leadoff walk was issued to Jesse Carriere to start the inning, and after Findlay's Mike Steele retired the next two batters, he walked Mike Ferguson, opening the door for a little two-out thunder.  Mejia followed Ferugson with a double to left center, scoring Carrier in the process.  Moments later, Mejia and Ferguson both scored on Koepf's base hit to left.

The Oilers pulled within one, scoring in the bottom of the third, before NDC put up another three-spot in the top of the fifth inning.  Koepf began the inning with a single to left field, before Jesse Bartle walked, setting up Keifer Quick's three-run homer, his second of the year, giving NDC a 7-3 advantage.

Findlay began to chew away at the deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning, and added another run in the sixth.  Koepf struck again in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single to score Ferguson, giving NDC an 8-6 lead.

The Oilers went to work in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback.  A walk, hit batsman and a single loaded the bases right away, before Michael Louis tied the game with a two-run double to left field.  Dan Poskocil then struck out Joe Sickleer, before issuing an intentional walk to load the bases. The Oilers won moments later when Jordan Garcia reached on an error, to bring in the game winner.

Eric Napoli (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned on just one hit while fanning three over two innings of relief.  The Falcons used four different hurlers in the contest.  Matt Kastelic started, and allowed six runs, only three earned on seven hits through six innings with five walks and five strikeouts.

Koepf's four-hit day led the NDC offense.  Koepf went 4-for-5 with a run scored and drove in a trio of runs.  Quick had a big day at the plate as well for the Falcons, going 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, while Ferguson went 2-for-2, scored twice, and reached in all four plate appearances.

The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, April 9, for another roadie when they take on California (Pa.) in a twin bill.  The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
