ERIE Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons delivered a strong pitching performance from
Zach Gresch on Wednesday afternoon, but it was not enough, as they fell to Mercyhurst, 3-2.
The loss for the Falcons (10-18) was their fourth in a row, while the Mercyhurst (19-11) has now run off four straight victories.
The two teams combined for just eight hits, in a game where pitching thoroughly dominated. Notre Dame had a 2-0 lead, but lost their advantage in the final three innings of the contest.
The Falcons jumped ahead, 1-0 in the top half of the third, on back-to-back two-out hits from
Jon Koepf and
Jesse Bartle. Koepf stroked a single back up the middle and he scored moments later on Bartle's double down the left field line.
NDC added to their advantage in the top of the seventh inning.
Bryan Blondeaux reached on a fielder's choice, and scored later in the inning on a throwing error to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Lakers began their comeback in the home half of the seventh inning, when Kolin McMillen belted a run scoring triple down the right field line.
Mercyhurst rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning to take the victory. Stephen Scaccia produced the game tying RBI and the game winning run. His two-out single to right field scored Joel Yeagley, and Scaccia scored the game winner on a wild pitch.
Gresch was fantastic in the loss. He did not get the decision, but went eight innings, and surrendered a pair of runs on three hits while fanning three in the process. Kevin Beduhn (1-1) surrendered the winning run in the ninth and was tagged with the loss.
The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, April 9, for another roadie when they take on California (Pa.) in a twin bill. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
