LORAIN, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons fell twice in their home finale at the Pipeyard on Tuesday afternoon, falling to California (Pa.), 11-3, and 4-1.
The losses for Notre Dame (16-24) were their only setbacks in six home contests this season, while the victories for the Vulcans (29-12) give them five in their last seven games, and 11 in 17 games on the road.
Game One
The Falcons were ultimately outdone by a five run fifth inning from the Vulcans. Cal put a run on the board in the top of the third to snap a scoreless tie, and then erupted for five in the fifth inning.
The Vulcans scored those runs on just three hits, while taking advantage of a pair of walks, a wild pitch and an error. The inning began with Kyle Petty's solo homer. Chris Mitko came in later in the inning on Will Kaufman's groundout. A wild pitch and an error brought in the next two runs, before Derrik Zeroski capped the big inning on a run scoring double.
Cal put five more on the board in the board in the top of the seventh inning. NDC avoided the shutout with a trio of runs in the last half inning.
Alex Harms started the inning with a base hit, and came around to score on
Hank Beasore's double to center.
Jesse Bartle brought Tanner Dovsek home on a sacrifice fly, and
Keifer Quick drove in the final run on an RBI single.
Tanner Scott (3-5) surrendered six runs, four earned on five hits over 4.2 innings of action and was tagged with the loss. Cory Craig (2-1) tossed five scoreless innings of four hit ball and came away with the victory.
Game Two
The Vulcans went to work early the second game, plating a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. David Marcus doubled in the first run of the inning, and scored later in the inning on Mick Fennell's base hit.
NDC was able to cut the deficit in half, when they scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the third.
Alex Harms started the inning with a single to center field. Harms made his way to third on
Jarlys Mejia's single, and he scored on a passed ball.
Cal scored single runs in the third, and sixth innings, and NDC was not able to answer. The Vulcans pitching staff held the Falcons hitless over the final three innings, on their way to completing the double header sweep.
Zach Gresch (2-4) was effective for the Falcons, tossing all seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned on eight hits and struck out four in the loss. Eric Matthews paced the Falcons offensively on the day, going 3-for-7.
The Falcons are in action again on Sunday, April 28, when they head back to Urbana, Ohio, for their season finale against the Blue Knights. The first pitch for game one of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
