Falcons take Charge

Middle innings boost Falcons in victory over Chargers

Box Score
HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Notre Dame Falcons scored multiple runs in innings four, six, and seven on Monday afternoon to score an impressive road victory over Hillsdale, in a 9-3 thumping of the Chargers.

The victory for Notre Dame (16-22) gives them six in their last eight games, while the loss for the Chargers (15-22) extends their losing streak to four.

Matt Kastelic (5-2) turned in a masterful performance, setting a program record with 13 strikeouts in the victory.  He received quite a bit of help from Keifer Quick, who belted a seventh inning Grand Slam, on his way to a seven RBI afternoon.

Hillsdale took the early advantage with a single run in the home half of the third inning, before the Falcons answered with a pair in the top of the fourth.  Jarlys Mejia started the inning with a base hit, and made his way to third after Jesse Bartle reached on a throwing error.  With runners on second and third, Quick delivered his first big hit of the game, a two-run single to score both Mejia and Bartle, giving the Falcons a 2-1 edge.

Notre Dame added to their advantage in the fifth inning, when Pat Ross went deep for the first time this season, with a solo homer before NDC put two more on the board in the sixth inning. Jon Koepf made his way to first after a leadoff walk, and scored a few moments later on Jesse Bartle's double.  Bartle advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on Quick's sacrifice fly.

The Falcons put the game out of reach in the seventh inning.  The Falcons scored four times on only two hits.  A walk was issued to Jesse Carriere, before Koepf and Bartle were both hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Quick, who capped his huge day at the plate with his third bomb of the year, a Grand Slam to put the Falcons out in front, 9-1.

The Chargers did add a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but it was too little, and too late.

Kastelic earned the victory after allowing just three runs on six hits over eight incredible innings.  He issued just a pair of free passes while striking out 13.  Bartle and Quick combined to record four of NDC's seven knocks on the afternoon.  Bartle went 2-for-4 with three runs and one driven in, while Quick drove in seven of NDC's nine runs, going 2-for-3 on the day.

The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, April 23, when they head back to the Pipeyard in Lorain, Ohio, for their home finale.  They'll take on California (Pa.) in a double header, and the first pitch in game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
