Falcons drop two to Salem International

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SALEM, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons dropped a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon to Salem International (W.Va.), falling 12-6, and 4-3.

The losses for the Falcons (10-17) extended their losing streak to three, while the victories for Salem (9-21) the double header sweep snapped a three game slide.

The first game featured a ton of offense, with both teams combining to score 18 runs on 23 hits.  Both teams traded single runs in the first inning before the Tigers plated four in the second.  SIU used two other big frames to put the game out of reach with five in the fourth inning, and scored twice in the fifth.

The Falcons jumped on the board in the first inning on a run scoring single from Eric Mathews.  NDC then plated a pair of runs in the sixth and three in the seventh, but could not dig themselves out of a 12-1 hole.

Jared Clovis belted a one out double to start the sixth inning, and came home moments later on a two-run bomb off the bat of Bryan Blondeaux, his first of the season.  The Falcons plated their final three runs on back-to-back two-baggers from Mathews and Clovis in the seventh.  Mathews's double scored two, before he came home on Clovis's third double of the year.

Game two proved to be a pitcher's duel, as both sides failed to register double digits in the hit column.  This time, Salem scored first, getting a pair of runs in the home half of the first inning to take the early lead.

Notre Dame was able to cut that deficit in half in the top of the third, when Jesse Bartle belted his first homerun of the season.  The Tigers added single runs in the third and the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage.

NDC scored twice in the top of the seventh, before a double play ended the contest.  Brennan Singleton started the inning with a single and made his way to second when Jarlys Mejia walked.  Bartle and Mathews then stroked back-to-back run scoring singles, before the Tigers slammed the door shut to preserve a one-run victory.

Tanner Scott (2-4) took the loss in the opener, allowing five runs, four earned on four hits.  He went 2.1 innings, issued five free passes and fanned four.  Tyler DeCrapio (1-3) took the loss in game two, but still pitched well.  He surrendered four runs, three earned, on seven hits while going the distance and struck out six in the process.

Bartle led the way for NDC offensively with four hits in the twin bill, going 4-for-8 with a pair of runs scored and two batted in.  Mathews and Clovis both registered three  hits on the afternoon, while Mathews knocked in four.

The Falcons are in action again on Wednesday, April 3, when the head to Erie, Pa. for a meeting with Mercyhurst.  The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
