Box Score
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Notre Dame ran its Florida-week record to 3-0 on Monday, courtesy a 16-6 win over Wayne State (Neb.).
For the Falcons (6-7), the 16 runs marked their most in a game since April 6, 2010 (20 runs vs. John Carroll). The offensive explosion comes on the heels of NDC averaging just 2.9 runs per game over its first 12 games this season.
Notre Dame scored runs in 5-of-9 innings and cranked out 17 hits in the win over the Wildcats (4-5). Second baseman
Jarlys Mejia went 2-for-6, with a triple and five RBIs, and designated hitter
Shane DeFranco went 3-for-4, with three runs scored for a Falcon team that is now 6-1 over its last seven games.
Batting as the home nine, Wayne State struck first when they sent seven men to the plate in the bottom of inning No. 1. The Wildcats had four singles in the inning, and came out of it with a 2-0 lead.
Notre Dame countered right away, scoring four in the top of the second. NDC piled four singles on top of a hit batsman and a Wayne State error in scoring the quartet of runs. The Falcons then ran their lead to 6-2 when
Brennan Singleton singled in two runs in the third.
Those crooked numbers in the second and third staked NDC starter
Bryan Pyper to a four-run lead. Pyper, making his fifth start of the season, worked in and out of trouble and lasted five innings. He extricated himself from jams with double-play groundballs in both the third and fourth, and left the game having struck out five batters while allowing 11 hits.
The Wildcats scored one run in the fourth and the two sided traded two-spots in the sixth. The Falcons then outscored Wayne State, 8-1, over the final three innings. NDC did the bulk of its damage in the ninth when 10 men went to the plate and six came in to score. Mejia's triple was the centerpiece of that inning, with the three-bagger clearing a set of loaded bases.
In addition to Mejia and DeFranco,
Bryan Blondeaux,
Keifer Quick and
Eric Mathews also collected multiple hits in the game. As a team the Falcons went 9-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
Right-handers
Taylor Neville (three innings, one run allowed) and
Kevin Bedhun (scoreless ninth) mopped up the win, combining for four innings of quality relief.
