CHILLICOTHE, Ohio --
Zach Gresch and
Tyler DeCrapio both pitched gems, and Notre Dame got solid defense and a few clutch at-bats in a doubleheader sweep of the Lake Erie Storm on Sunday.
Gresch went 6-1/3 innings in the opener, allowing two runs in an eventual 3-2 win for NDC. DeCrapio backed that up by tossing the second shutout of his career in a 1-0 thriller in the nightcap. The twin victories snapped a four-game losing skid and evened the two-day, four-game, neutral-site series with Lake Erie (3-10).
A fourth-inning, two-run single by sophomore first baseman
Hank Beasore vaulted Notre Dame (10-14) to a comeback win in a tense, hard-fought opener. A spectacular defensive play -- a right-to-short-to-third putout on a fly ball -- ended the opener a half-step before a runner crossed home plate. That run would have tied the score, but the
Jesse Bartle-to-
Jared Clovis-to-
Jon Koepf play preserved win. Those three were key factors in the one-run victory -- Koepf and Bartle with their defense on several occasions and Clovis in going 3-for-3 in the game.
Gresch held Lake Erie to two runs while striking out five in a game
Taylor Neville closed by getting the final two outs.
In the nightcap DeCrapio hung zeroes throughout, scattering six base hits.
Brennan Singleton knocked in the game's only run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
The games were contested on a cold, overcast day at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
