Pitching leads the way in sweep of West Virginia State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W. Va. -- Notre Dame picked up its first wins of the season on Saturday, as the Falcons downed the West Virginia State Yelow Jackets, 3-0 and 4-2, in a pair of pitching duels.

Matt Kastelic pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener, allowing just four singles while hanging zeroes for seven straight frames. The Falcons scored a solo run in the third inning and a pair in the fourth. Jesse Carriere, Jon Koepf and Jarlys Mejia each had RBI hits. Keifer Quick went 3-for-3 with a double, as NDC earned its first win of the 2013 campaign.

In the nightcap, Tanner Scott started and went 4-1/3 innings, working in and out of trouble but allowing just two runs. Scott gave up those runs in the third after Notre Dame had scored two in the second.

The Falcons (2-6) broke that 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth when Carriere hit a home run leading off the inning. NDC added an insurance run in the sixth. Tyler DeCrapio pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings to preserve the win.

Host West Virginia State (1-3) got its leadoff man aboard in just two of the combined 14 innings of play on Saturday.  NDC outhit WVSU, 16-6, over the two games played in 45-degree temperatures at Calvin L. Bailey Field.
