COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Notre Dame College wrestling team opened their 2013-14 dual season in historical St. John Arena against Ohio State University.
The Falcons, ranked No.1 in the nation in both the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Poll and the Basford NCAA-II Poll, fell 29-11 to the Buckeyes, who are currently ranked No.9 in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. NDC who won three matches fall to 0-4 all-time against the Buckeyes but produced their best ever performance against OSU.
The match started at 125 pounds, where OSU's Nick Roberts won by major decision over NDC's
Brian Hauser 10-2. The Buckeyes extended their lead to 9-0 when No.15 Johnni DiJulius won by tech fall, 16-0, over No.5
Marty Carlson at the 5:48 mark.
Two-time NCAA Division I National Champion No.1 Logan Stieber continued the Buckeyes run pinning
Andrew Bannister at the 2:10 mark in the 141 pound match. OSU's Ian Paddock won a tight match against No.3
Maurice Miller 5-3 in the 149 pound match.
At 157 pounds Randall Languis continued OSU's winning run, winning by a 2-0 decision over
Jonatan Rivera in what again was a very closely fought match. OSU's Joe Grandominico recorded a 12-2 major decision victory over
Anthony Burge in the 165 pound match.
The Falcons recorded their first victory at 174 pounds, when NCAA Division II National Champion No.1
Joey Davis defeated Mark martin 10-4. Davis, who completed his freshman year unbeaten at 33-0, now moves to 44-0 in his career at NDC. At 184 pounds No.9 Kenny Courts (OSU) recorded a 14-1 major decision victory over
Charles Mason.
The Falcons finished the match strongly winning the final two matches. First No.3
Brandonn Johnson defeated Ray Gordon, recording a tech fall at the 5:42 mark, 18-1. No.2
Orlando Scales then provided a grand finish for the Falcons winning 5-3 in overtime over Nick Tavanello.
"I thought we performed well, recording three wins including a tech fall, we fared well and fought hard," said Head Wrestling Coach
Frank Romano. "It's early in the season and I am pleased at where we are at. It is real thrill for me coming back to Ohio State and I was happy with the performance."
The Falcons will now travel to Campbellvilles, Ky. to take part in the Campbellvilles Duals before returning home to South Euclid to face Ashland University in a dual meet on Wednesday Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
