CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College women's soccer team defeated the Charleston Golden Eagles 3-1 to remain undefeated and move to 8-0 in conference and 10-0 overall.
Despite conceding their first goal in 498 minutes the Falcons remain unbeaten thanks to two goals from
Natalie Ockunzzi and one from
Alex Defilippo.
NDC opened the scoring almost immediately when
Natalie Ockunzzi pressurized the Golden Eagles goalkeeper forcing her to make a clearance that deflected off of Ockunzzi and into the goal.
Charleston however responded well and equalized in the 20th minute. The Golden Eagles are still the only team to have scored against the Falcons this season.
The Falcons re-took the lead in the 30th minute when
Alex Defilippo was able to beat the last defender and score her fifth goal of the season.
The second half started in a similar fashion for the Falcons with
Natalie Ockunzzi scoring in the 46th minute when she latched on to a
Megan O'Connor cross.
The Falcons were then able to hold on to their 3-1 lead, thanks largely to goalkeeper
Kristy Kolschetzky who came up big for the Falcons saving a Charleston penalty kick.
"It was a tough away game, we knew Charleston were going to be good," said Head Coach
Mike Shiels. "We conceded our first goal in a while but the girls responded well and dealt well with the pressure. The performance overall was ok but what mattered most today was the three points."
The Falcons, who are currently ranked
sixth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), will return home on Saturday Oct. 12. to take on Wheeling Jesuit at 3 p.m.
