ATHENS, W. Va. – The Notre Dame College women's soccer team secured the Mountain East Conference regular season championship with a 1-0 victory over the Concord University Mountain Lions.
The Falcons (14-1-0, 12-1-0 MEC) claimed the first conference championship in the programs history thanks to a
Karla DiJohn goal. DiJohn scored the game's only goal in the 76th minute when her free kick drifted over the Mountain Lions goalkeeper.
The Falcons held the advantage over the Mountain Lions in both shots (13-7) and corner kicks (8-1) in what was a strong offensive performance for NDC.
The Falcons were led by freshman forward
Natalie Ockunzzi with three shots. Sophomore forward
Kathrine Beattie had two shots and junior forward Alex Difilippo, freshmen midfielder
Karla DiJohn and freshmen midfielder
Megan O'Connor had one shot each.
The Falcon defense and goalkeeper
Kristy Kolschetzky had their 12th shutout of the season to extend their program record.
"This was our goal at the start of the season" said Head Coach
Mike Shiels. "At that point we weren't certain it was possible, but credit to the team they have worked hard all year and really deserve this. We are by no means done though and we hope to give the seniors a win on Tuesday for their last game at home."
The Falcons have claimed the MEC regular season title and the top seed in the MEC tournament with one game remaining. The Falcons will host Urbana on Tuesday Oct. 29th at 4 p.m. on what will be senior night.
