Falcons Fall For The First Time This Season

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team fell to their first loss of the season, losing 1-0 at West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Falcons (11-1-0) put together the best start to a season and longest win streak in program history prior to today's defeat.

The Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan, who lie second in the Mountain East Conference standings, started strongly and were rewarded in the 23rd minute with a goal from Rachel Ransom. The Falcons who are unaccustomed to trailing in games, this was the first deficit the Falcons have faced this season, to their credit responded well and created a number of opportunities towards the end of the first half.

The Falcons produced a much stronger performance in the second half but were unfortunately unable to draw level. The Bobcats outshot the Falcons 11-8 and were deserving of the victory given their strong start.

"It was going to happen eventually and this is one of the best teams we have faced all season." said Head Coach Mike Shiels. "Credit has to go to our team for the way they fought and also for putting together the longest winning streak in program history. It is now time start a new streak and get back to winning ways on Saturday."  

The Falcons, who are currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), will return home to face the Rams from Shepherd on Saturday October 19th at 1:00 p.m.
