NDC loses tough conference battle

West Virginia State defeats Notre Dame in 5 sets

Box Score Dunbar, W. Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons lost in five sets to conference foe West Viginia State Yellow Jackets in Fleming Hall on Friday night.

Notre Dame (2-18, 0-6 MEC) remains winless in MEC play, while the Yellow Jackets (6-9, 3-2) have now won three in a row.
 
The Falcons won the first set 25-22. The second set was a seesaw battle which saw no team gain a significant point advantage on the other. West Virginia State closed out the second set with a block of Morgan Toman to win the set, 25-23.
 
The third set was a game of runs. NDC jumped out to a 10-5 advantage before the Yellow Jackets fought their way back to even the score at 14-14. The Blue & White went on another run, this time running the score to 22-17. WVSU would not go away, evening the score at 25-25. Suzanne Morris came up with a big kill to make the score 26-25 NDC and then followed it up by teaming with Stephanie Frick to block a Yellow Jacket attempt to win the set for Notre Dame, 27-25.
 
In the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets used a steady attack to mirror the tempo of the second set. The Falcons seemingly could not overtake the Yellow Jackets at any point in the set. WVSU took the set, 25-23, forcing a fifth set.
 
The fifth set was back-and-forth throughout. Notre Dame took a timeout trailing 12-13. A Morgan Toman kill tied things up at 13-13. The Yellow Jackets took the next two points, winning the set 15-13.
 
Morgan Toman and Stephanie Frick paced the Notre Dame attack with 14 kills each. Ryan Moriarty (27) and Brittany Perrot (26) combined for 53 digs. Shelby Regiec had 45 assists as well as 18 digs of her own. Katie Sullivan and Suzanne Morris each had 5 blocks.
 
The Falcons will return home for two games in two days, starting with visiting Concord (W. Va.) on Friday the 18th. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Murphy Gymnasium.
