NDC snaps three game losing skid in double header split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
LORAIN, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons snapped a three game losing skid, and brought Cedarville's nine game winning streak to an end, as they split a twin bill at the Pipeyard on Thursday afternoon, with a shutout victory, and a shutout loss.

Notre Dame (11-19-1) received a strong pitching performance from Matt Kastelic in game one, and scored it's first victory in just over a week, while the Yellow Jackets (21-5) suffered just their third road loss of the season.

Kastelic (3-1) dominated the first contest for Notre Dame, as he outdueled Cedarville's Jordan Ammon (5-1) in a 1-0 NDC victory.  The Yellow Jackets returned the favor, earning the split with 4-0 victory in game two.

Game One

The Falcons were outhit, 4-3 in the opening contest, but plated a run in the in the bottom of the fourth inning, which proved to be the difference.

Ammon was in command for most of the game, but issued a trio of walks in the home half of the fourth inning.  It all started when Ammons issued a one out free pass to Taylor Neville, who made his way to third base after a base hit from Eric Mathews.  Jessie Carriere then walked to load the bases, and with two outs, Ammons walked Jared Clovis to bring in the only run of the contest.

Cedarville had its best chance to score in the top of the third.  Dan Petke began the inning with a base hit, before moving to second on a passed ball.  Petke made his way to third when Paul Hembekides flew out to right field, but Petke was left stranded when Logan Kasabian grounded out to end the inning.

The game ended with the tying run in scoring position.  Kastelic retired the first two batters of the inning, before he plunked Chris Ward.  Ryan Ledbetter then walked, moving Ward to second, before Kastelic induced a groundout to end the game.

Kastelic stole the show for NDC, going the distance, and scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings of work and fanned five batters in the process.  Ammon also went the distance, and allowed just the run on three hits but walked four batters and struck out two.

Game Two

The Notre Dame offense was silenced in the second contest, as they were held to just four hits, and failed to score in a 4-0 loss.  Ryan Ledbetter (3-1) turned in his fourth complete game of the season, and never gave NDC a chance.

The Yellow Jackets plated single runs in the first and fifth, before getting two big insurance runs in the seventh.  Nate Davenport drove in the game's first run on an RBI double in the top of the first inning, and Alex Beelen added to the lead with a run scoring base hit in the fifth.

Cedarville doubled it's advantage by scoring twice on four hits in the top of the seventh.  The Yellow Jackets stroked three consecutive one out singles, and Sam Sumerlin's was the third in that sequence, which plated Cam McWilliams.  The Yellow Jackets got their final run on Davenport's two out, RBI single to left.

The Falcons didn't have many chances to score.  Jon Koepf made his way to third base on a pair of passed balls with two outs in the home half of the third, but Pat Ross ended the inning with a fly-out to left.

NDC had two on with one out in the fourth inning, but still could not cash in, and the Falcons hit into a pair of double plays in the contest.

Ledbetter delivered seven scoreless innings and struck out four, while issuing no free passes in a winning effort, while Simon Davis (2-3) suffered the loss.  Davis went all seven for NDC, and allowed four runs on nine hits, and fanned 10 batters in the process.

NDC and Cedarville will get reacquainted again tomorrow afternoon, in a twin bill down in Cedarville, Ohio.  The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.

NOTES FROM THE NEST ...

SWINGIN' WITH CEDARVILLE: Thursday afternoon's twin bill marked the 17th and 18th meetings between the two teams.  The old American Mideast Conference foes have met four times a year, every year since 2008.  Prior to Thursday's meetings, the all-time series was split right down the middle, with both teams winning eight games.  The Falcons are 5-3 at home all time against the Yellow Jackets.
